Ability: Red doesn't fight on his own as well, he is using his pokemon team to beat his oponents: Aero- Red can attack his oponents with Aero (Strength 7) Poli and Pika combo- Red can attack his oponents with both Pika and Poli, with a 50% chance of stunning the oponent next round. Vee- has a 30% chance of confusing the oponent and make him hit himself as hard as he can. Snor- Can use yawn to make the oponent fall asleep for 2 rounds (20%) Saur- The most powerful pokemon of Red. Poison the oponent. In 2 turns the poison will take effect, in the 4th round the oponend will be injured and die in the 7th round of the poison. ~Tenshi
Story: Red- In this saga, Red is the main protagonist, and his main rival is Blue. Red was first seen showing off his catching abilities to a group of little kids, but once they mentioned Proff.Oak and his grandson, they left. He then sees a few Team Rocket Grunts and overhears them talking about Mew. He manages to find it, only to see that Blue, who he didn't know yet, was already battling it with a Charmander. Seeing Blue quickly recalling his Pokémon angers Red to a point where he sends out his own Poliwhirl on it and is easily defeated. He then receives some words of wisdom from Blue and decides to suck up his pride and go to see Proff.Oak.
How he joined the game: Red defeated the elite four and with that his journey ended. He trained his Pokemon to the max of their ability and wanted to test their strength out in a new challenge.

Think about it like this- Red almost alone took an entire group of criminals after passing every trap they set for him. Besides in the manga Red is super intellegence than he is in the game, saying only "..."
